Anti-Racism Training & Curriculum Development

Higher education today must meet the needs of its constituents by prioritizing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belongingness on their college campuses.

Today’s generation demands it.

The conversations are more explicit. The push for radical change is here.

Educators cannot afford to miss an opportunity to learn, grow, and integrate critical race discussions on campus.

Racial Literacy Advocates is here to help

Our training and curriculum development programs are for secondary educators and college educators who want to create a classroom dynamic that is predicated on critical race understanding and decolonized pedagogy.

We believe racial literacy is a concept best implemented in academic spaces. Educators have an incredible opportunity and obligation to inform and transform the next generation of leaders.

With these trainings, educators will attend a day-long workshop that is designed to give them foundational content that addresses a myriad of race-related factors at the intersection of education, classroom, and organization management. During the training, they will be provided a manual that includes materials and curriculum that they can integrate in the classroom prior to and after their students attend a RaceTalk workshop or panel.

These programs are customized to the needs of your institution, but they generally include:

An all-day training and workshop

A RaceTalk workshop and panel presentation for participants and/or their students

100-page workbook for current and ongoing anti-racist journey work

Sustainable Education for the Next Generation

Our goal is to create sustained literacy among educators and their students.

We believe that higher education – both students and educators – is an ideal setting to learn the fundamentals of radical anti-racism.

Per the data, a single RaceTalk panel or workshop does not yield sustained racial literacy. To reconcile this reality, workshops can be institutionalized (see the First Year Experience model below), or Dr. Simmons can meet with clients for continued conversation and in-class facilitation with curriculum and instructional training beyond the workshop or panel.

Anti-Racism Training & Curriculum Development

The First-Year
Experience Model

As we continue to evolve as a politically charged country with race at the forefront of that discussion, we must prioritize racial literacy in higher education. Implementing RaceTalk programming with first-year students gives the institution an opportunity to acclimate students to race-related content at the early stages of their academic trajectory. RaceTalk programming is designed to educate and prepare all students for cross-racial interactions that lead to inclusive interpersonal connections.

Those connections will hopefully inspire inclusivity, a desire to interrogate colonized pedagogy in classrooms, and create student-led social justice-oriented activism on campus.

All incoming first year students are required to sign up for a workshop time that fits their schedules. Various days and times will be offered to accommodate class schedules and other obligations. Participants will complete pre- and post-surveys and participate in a follow-up focus group session to debrief the experience. Data will be used to assess program effectiveness.

Once a student signs up for their preferred time, they receive an email with a link to complete the pre-survey. Once the student has completed the pre-survey, their enrollment in that session will be confirmed. Following the RaceTalk workshop, participants will receive a link to complete their post-survey and sign up for a focus group session. Focus groups will be facilitated by a trained team of student researchers, last approximately 45 minutes, and be limited to 15 participants for each session. Upon completion of the process, students will receive a certificate of participation.

Each RaceTalk workshop will be capped at 80 students per session and sessions will run for 4 hours. This includes 2 hours of training, 50 minutes for 4 panelists to share their narratives, a 10-minute break, a 45-minute question and answer session, and 15 minutes for meditative adjournment and a final evaluation of the experience.
